We are officially announcing the date for the next Jake's Music Festival. The next event will be April 14th, 2012 at the Wealthy Theatre in Grand Rapids. Mark your calendar because you will not want to miss this year's show. We have some exciting plans to make 2012 our best year ever. That means great music and great fun, all supporting the LOCAL chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Jake's Music Festival has become an almost year round endeavor for our volunteer staff. We are already starting to plan for the 2012 show. We know will be back at the Wealthy Theatre in April. So now we are thinking about bands for next year's line-up. Which local West Michigan bands would you like to see? Leave your suggestions in the comments.

What a great night. Thanks to everyone who attended Jake's Music Festival 2011. Also thanks to our sponsors, volunteers, staff and especially the performers. We raised over $5,000 for diabetes research. We'll be posting photos and videos soon. In the meantime click here for a review by John Sinkevics of the Grand Rapids Press.

Tomorrow, Tomorrow, it's almost tomorrow

Despite the title of this post we promise no Broadway show tunes tomorrow. However, we will have almost every other kind of music at Jake's Music Festival. There will be folk, funk, rock, and roll, electric violin, accordion, singer songwriters, and a man wearing a kilt. Where else can you go for this kind of musical diversity?

The doors open at 2:30 and the music starts at 3:00. The last band is scheduled to hit stage at 10:00 p.m. It's eight hours of solid music. So be one of the cool kids, come to the show at the Wealthy Theatre Saturday (tomorrow) to see the best that local music has to offer. AND help us raise money to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes. Silent Auction and other stuff

We have quite a number of items for the silent auction. Thanks to these local companies for their donations.
Grand Rapids Art Museum, Eastern Floral, West Michigan Whitecaps, Twisted Rooster, Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, Grand Rapids Symphony, San Chez, Smooch Beauty Boutique, Grand Rapids Public Museum, Grand Rapids Children's Museum, John Russo's Wine Warehouse and Deli, From the Heart Yoga, Robinette's Gift Barn, and Grand River Grocery. We'll also have a music package featuring CD's from the bands playing at the festival and a framed festival poster.

The Wealthy Theatre will have adult beverages, soft drinks and snacks available for sale. There are also plenty of restaurants within walking distance if you want to take in dinner before, during or after the show.

Less than a month

We are less than one month away from Jake's Music Festival 2011 and the excitement is building. Over the next few weeks you'll see posters going up all over town, we'll be featured on several area radio stations and our Facebook page will be buzzin'. This marks our seventh year of putting on this festival. In that time we've raised thousands of dollars for diabetes research. It's great seeing so many people come out to listen to fantastic local music and support a worthy cause.
Thanks to our sponsors Frames Unlimited, The Gordon Group and Magic Hat #9. Because of their generosity this year's show is free to attend. But you'll want to bring some money anyway. The Wealthy Theatre will have adult beverages available for purchase, including Magic Hat #9. There will be a silent auction with items from several Local First member businesses. We'll post a full list when we get closer to the show date. Finally, we'd love for everyone in attendance to donate to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It's not required but it is appreciated.

Changes to the web site

We've made a couple of changes to the web site to make it easier to get information about Jake's Music Festival. Underneath the banner headline you will see three tabs "Home", "2011 Band photos" and "2011 Show Line-up".
The Home page will list current information about what is going on with the festival. Photos of this year's bands are under the next tab and the third tab is the line-up with start times. This should make it easier for our readers to find out who's playing and at what time without having to scroll all the way through the main blog. Hope you like the changes and we look forward to seeing everyone on April 16th.

We have some great bands on tap for this year's festival. We are very pleased to announce AB and Coconut Brown as our headliners. Other performers include Igby Iris, The Fainting Generals, Chance Jones, Paucity, The Velora’s, Spitting Image, Karisa Wilson w/ Lynn Thompson, Ritsu the Great - Violin Extraordinaire, Todd Herring, Ryan McCarthy, Michael Schaeffer – Accordion Extraordinaire and DJ Jef Leppard. Plus we will have a few other acts and special guests just seem to show up. This is a great evening of local music. In fact, with all these bands we are going to be starting at 3:00 p.m. this year. What a great show last night. We started out with an almost full house and had a steady stream of people all night long. In all over 500 people took in all or part of this year's Festival. The best news is that we raised almost $4,000 for diabetes research. Thanks to everyone who participated and enjoy this slide show of Jake's Music Festival 2010.

What a great show!

Last night was fantastic! Thanks to everyone who worked on the show, played in the show or attended the show. Our opening acts, The Five Leaf Clover Band and Fylte (Grand Rapids School of Rock) rally kicked things off with a bang. The audience was literally on their feet when these groups performed. End Time Orchestra showed us that jazz is back in Grand Rapids. The Truckstop Cobras rocked the house again with some of the best rockabilly music around. Todd Herring, Andy Holtgrieve and Karisa Wilson were each fantastic in their own way playing solo between the bands. A lot of amazing talent in those too short segments. Making an incredible impression was the relatively new Irish band The Waxies. Craic Wisely better watch their back. Rounding out the evening was Mid-Life Crisis playing a great mix or original tunes and old favorites. Special thanks to Steve Bloom for providing the MLC drum set for use by all the bands. Thanks also to Clay Grueber, our excellent music director for literally "doing it all" behind the scenes. We also want to thank the staff and volunteers at Wealthy Theatre, the video crew, the silent auction volunteers and everyone who supported us with a donation of any kind. We don't have the final numbers yet, but it looks like we have raised between $2,500 and $3000 for diabetes research! Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible and watch for the photos coming soon.

ANNOUNCING JMF 2008

This year marks the fourth installment of Jake's Music Festival. This annual celebration of local music takes place on Saturday, September 6 at the Wealthy Theatre in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This will be the biggest line-up we've had since starting the festival in 2005. Featured performers include MidLife Crisis, the Truckstop Cobras, and Karisa Wilson. There will also be special solo performances by members of Craic Wisely and Domestic Problems. But wait there's more... we'll be announcing a couple more bands in the near future.
All proceeds from Jake's Music Festival support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's West Michigan chapter.

As part of the fun at JMF we will be having a silent auction in the Wealthy Street lobby. We have items from GB Russo, Celebration Cinema, Seva Yoga, Kay Pharmacy, Clothing Matters, Godwin Plumbing, Art of the Table and XS Energy Drink. The silent auction will open at 6:00 p.m. and close when the last band gets on stage.

We've just added Lucy Ernst, also known as Bad Dolly, to our line-up. Lucy will be playing acoustic sets between the band performances.
Tickets will be available for only $10, starting next week at the Wealthy Street Theatre box office. The box office is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. You can also order by phone at 616-459-4788 ex. 131.
There will also be a small silent auction in the Wealthy Street lobby. We have items from G.B. Russo & Sons, Clothing Matters, and Seva Yoga. There is also a poster from JMF 2 that was signed by all of last years bands.
And finally, to add to the fun, we will be serving Magic Hat #9 Beer, a highly regarded craft brew from Vermont. Good music, good beer, an auction and fun people. August 11 promises to be a great night.

We have FIVE great bands lined up for this year's music festival. Once again the musical styles run the gamut. Our headliner this year is metal rock band FLEDfive. Returning for their third year at JMF is the Celtic band Craic Wisely. Also back are folk rockers Common Shiner and Zydeco band Creolization with David Molinari. and rounding out the bill is Los Cobras, purveyors of surf music.

The show runs from 6:00 p.m. to midnight on SATURDAY, August 11 at the Wealthy Street Theatre. Tickets are only $10. That's only two bucks a band, plus all the money raised goes to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. A great time at a great location for a great cause. See you there!

We have set the date for the third annual Jake's Music Festival. Join us on Saturday, August 11, 2007 at the Wealthy Street Theatre in Grand Rapids for the best concert of the season. The award winning Irish band Craic Wisely will be back this year. As with the last two years, all proceeds go to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It’s been called the hottest ticket of the summer. Great bands and great folks getting together to support a great cause.

Jake’s Music Festival, an annual celebration of local music, takes place on August 3, 2006 at the Wave Room at Celebration Cinema in Grand Rapids. Top-notch local bands performing this year include Craic Wisely, Muddy V. and the House Rockers, Common Shiner and Creolization. All proceeds will support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Ride for a Cure.

Local musician and actor Todd Herring is the music coordinator for the festival. “We wanted to put together a roster of local bands that make great music on their own, and then by having them all in the same location it turns into a magical evening. Last year’s festival was fantastic.” Herring’s group, Irish band Craic Wisely, will headline the event. Also on the bill are blues group Muddy V. and the House Rockers, folk/rock group Common Shiner and the Dave Molinari led Zydeko group Creolization.

Sponsors for the evening include John Hancock Financial Network, BlueWater Technologies, Celebration Cinema, Corporate Sound, This Side Up and XS Energy Drink.

The JDRF Ride for a Cure takes place in October 21 in Death Valley, California. Rockford, Michigan bicyclists Tom and Mary Scheidel are putting together this music festival to help benefit their 15-year-old son, Jake. “Jake was 6 years old when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes,” said Tom. “He’ll be a sophomore in high school this fall, so that means he’s been living with a potentially fatal disease for over 9 years. Every single day, Jake has to test his blood sugar at least 4 times, by poking his finger and every 2 to 3 days he inserts a new tube into his abdomen to administer insulin from his pump. That means he’s stuck himself with a needle over 18,000 times. A little 105 mile ride through the desert doesn’t seem like much of a sacrifice in comparison.”

The Wave Room at Celebration Cinema on East Beltline in Grand Rapids, Michigan will be the site of the festival. There will be food, beer, and other concessions, as well as vendor tables and artists. The festival doors will open at 6:00 p.m. with music lasting until midnight. Tickets for Jake’s Music Festival are available by emailing JMF@scheidelgroup.com.

What do you get when you combine good music with a good cause?

A great time at the First Annual Jake’s Music Festival. Top-notch local bands will provide what promises to be a fun-filled evening on Thursday, August 18. Craic Wisely, Red Frog Drum and Dance Ensemble, and a special guest artist will perform at Studio 28 with all proceeds going to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Ride for a Cure.

Says Herring, “We were looking for area bands that play more than the same old cover stuff. We wanted to be original and put on an event that people are really going to want to be at.”

Theater 11 at Studio 28 will be the site of the festival, including the large former lobby area. Food, beer and concessions will be available in the lobby. Founder’s Brewery is the main sponsor and will be pouring their delicious brews. The Pita House/Sami’s Gyro will feature their Mediterranean cuisine. Soft drinks and movie style food will be available at the Studio 28 Café. There will also be other attractions as part of the festival. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. with music starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for Jake’s Music Festival are available at Studio 28, the JDRF offices, address or by emailing JMF@scheidelgroup.com.
